Planning

For my Media A2 Video production coursework. I have chosen the artist Florence and the Machine and her cover of 'You've got the Love' originally called 'You're love' by Frankie Knuckles and later released by Candie Statton as 'You've got the love.'

There are many reasons why I chose this song. Firstly for the iconic values of the song. First released in the 80's You've got the love has been re-released 5 times, and remixed to enter another genre of dance music equally as many times. The fact that this song has entered the top 20 each time it has been re-released proves its national success. Its a feel good song, powerful and easily recognised by all generations.
This song has been chosen to release by so many up and coming artists over the last decade that it has been noticed as one of the most successful songs.

The reason I have chosen Florence and the machines' cover of this song is that along with the power of this song, she again, is a very up and coming, new and interesting artist. Her Album 'Lungs' featured at the top of the album chart for 6 weeks. She was a number 1 guarantee to make an appearance at most festivals this summer, and when she covered 'You've go the love' The power of her voice was made clear to all of her fans. She was given a new level of appreciation for her talents.

Florence only sang this song at the end of all of her gigs and festival. Made most famous by Glastonbury when fans went mad, chanting and boo-ing when she announced this would be her last song. It gave her the new edge to sing a more versatile style of song and do it well.

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you
Sometimes I feel like saying,
"Lord, I just don't care"
But you've got the love I need to see me through
Sometimes I see that the boy is just too rough
And things go wrong no matter what I do
Now it feels like life is just too much
You've got the love I need to see me through

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you
Sometimes I feel like saying,
"Lord, I just don't care"
But you've got the love I need to see me through

Time after time I say,
"Oh Lord what's the use?"
Time after time I say,
"This just won't do"
But sooner or later in life the things you love you lose
Just like before, I know I call you
I can't believe my palms, degrading friends of you
I can't believe my fire,
Oh Lord, what must I do
I can't believe what I caught up, master made me new
But you've got the love I need to see me through

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you
Sometimes I feel like saying, "Lord, I just don't care"
But you've got the love I need to see me through

You've got the love x4
I need to see me through x4
You've got the love,
You've got the love,
You've got the love
You've got the love,
You've got the love,
You've got the love

The meaning for 'You've got the love' can vary depending on opinion. The perception I have of the song is that it is about a person struggling with everyday life, and searching for the release from his/her life through a loved one, be it a friend or family member. There is also a religious element in this song, maybe this person doesn't feel her friends and family are their only love, and the lord is also a big element in the release and search for happiness.

Having worked through a lot of potential ideas for the video for this song. Taking into account the meaning of the song, our initial idea follows one main character as she goes about her daily routine. She is a girl with a high powered job, and with this comes a lot of stress and essentially unhappiness. We watch as she gets up and goes to work, all the while the song is playing in a narrative way, telling the audience how she is feeling about her life. The way this will work is that the song wont play directly it will play throughout the car as she drives to work, a building site radio as she walks to work, through her ipod at work and finally as she finished work, she seeks her release from her stressful day and goes out with her friends, and as the song reached the climatic main chorus we see a different side to character, out with her friends having a good time. The song will then play in the pub/club she is dancing in.

Florence is a good role model for the type of character I want to use, with her carefree mannerisms and quirky ability to let herself go. This is the type of character we want to portray in the video. The images below show the inspirations for the type of character and feeling the video will have.

I have many ideas and inspirations surrounding this song and the choice of artist.

Other artists who have also a similar genre of music and equal ability to relate to them as real people rather than a modern day artist who is manufactured to be a certain way, are below.

Kate Nash: Also represents a similar attitude in her performances, and has similar characteristics to the character in the video.

Paloma Faith: Paloma is similar to Florence in the fact that she is also an up and coming, she has a unique fashion sense and individual way.

The group I am making my video with will all be taking an active role in the production. At this early planning stage, we are all beginning to write a treatment, shooting script, and storyboard. This is the most crucial part of the video as we will all need to be clear about what we are doing and how it will take place.
When it comes to the shooting of the video, we will be using friend to act out our characters, this will mean that the group members will be solely taking part in the filming and editing.

  1. You need to reference the sources you have used for the info about the song in the opening paragraphs. You also have said she is car-free instead of carefree so I would read through and check for similar errors.
